REVIEW: Extreme Couponing Show on TLC

May 24, 2011 Leave a comment

I watched the show last night for the first time and while I’m a huge advocate of couponing and saving money, this was just a little too extreme for me. You have to have balance in your life and these people, in my opinion, are almost as bad as the people on Hoarders. One lady claims she devotes approximately 60 hours a week to couponing. Her methods include: dumpster diving (trespassing) and taking sunday newspapers from foreclosed houses (trespassing and theft). What’s more, they were stocking up on alot of unneccesarry stuff just to have it. It just doesn’t make sense to me. With some of these folks, it’s just another addiction like any other addiction.

But on a positive note, the family that does it for charity, I think it’s just awesome and they deserve a huge round of applause for doing it.

I don’t think I’ll be watching this show again any time soon. Just didn’t do much for me at all.

I give it a C-

Tater Tot Casserole

May 17, 2011 Leave a comment

This is such a classic favorite and so versitile.  You can mix and match the veggies and meat up to your liking :)   I personally prefer the frozen O’Brien style hasbrown potatoes myself.

Ingredients & Supplies

Preheat oven to 375.F

9×13 baking pan

1lb cooked lean ground beef, turkey, pork, sausage, or shredded ham
1-10oz can cream of mushroom soup
1-16 oz package of your favorite veggies (thawed and drained)  I prefer mixed veggies myself
30oz bag of tator tots.  You could also use shredded hashbrown potatoes or the O’Brien style hashbrowns
1 envelope beefy dry onion soup mix
Shredded cheddar cheese to taste
Salt & Pepper to taste

Directions:

Mix meat, mushroom soup, and onion soup mix together and spread across the bottom of the pan.  Spread veggies evenly over the top of the meat mixture (I usually just mix the meat and veggie layer together).  Spread the potatoes evenly over the top of the veggie layer with salt and pepper and cover with tinfoil

Bake for about 70 minutes.  Remove foil.  Cover with cheddar cheese in the amount that suits ya (use as litte or as much cheese as you like).  Return to oven and continue to bake until cheese is good and melted.

FREE cookbooks. Yup totally free!

If you didn’t know already, copyrights expire after so many years (75 years I think) if they’re not renewed.  That includes books, which also includes (you guessed it) cookbooks.  Through google.com’s books and amazon.com’s kindle e-books, I have downloaded DOZENS of free cookbooks from the 1800′s and early 1900′s.  Even if you don’t have a kindle reader, you can download the pc (or mac) kindle reader application for free from Amazon.  The cookbooks I’ve downloaded from Google books  have been in .pdf format.  I”ve downloaded a number of the older Ladies’ Home Journal, Good Housekeeping and other brand-name cookbooks.  Of course, there’s a little searching involved to find the free ones, but it’s not too difficult.  Googlebooks has a sort-by-year function and Amazon has a free-ebooks link under their Kindle store.  Happy cookbook hunting!
